Masks are an integral part of several Indian and other theatre forms across the world. It is an essential skill to have for any theatre practitioner.
Shehla is an M.A. in Regional Development from J.N.U. She taught Geography for 2 years at Sacred Heart College (Dalhousie) and for 12 years at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya, New Delhi. She has done literacy work under Delhi Saaksharta Samiti and Total Literacy Mission. She wrote adult literacy primers for the same in 1993-94. Shela learnt the art of making pottery for three and a half years from Shri Devi Prasad and has been practicing pottery independently since 1999. She also started teaching teaching pottery in 1999 and has number of exhibitions to her credit. In 2003 she authored 'Do It Yourself- Art and Craft Activities', published by Scholastic. Shehla is an avid trekker. Some of her travel stories are published as a book 'Travel With Shehla' by Scholastic, 2004. Shehla is among the founder members of Jana Natya Manch-a leading street theatre group-since its inception in 1973. She acted in many stage plays and some street plays. She especially contributed to making costumes, props and masks for various plays. For 18 years she was a part of the editorial team of Nukkad Janam Samvad, a tri-monthly bilingual magazine on theatre and culture published by Jana Natya Manch.
