First Act – a 15-day beginner's guide to acting and stage craft workshop organized by AFTC – started in the year 2009. Shelli Koffman, a founder member of 'Fiefdom' – a long form improvisational group in New York, was invited to conduct the workshop as Director. She also worked regularly with ‘Westmont Theater Company, as well as Cabaret Theater and Hebrew Theater in Israel, and Columbia & Rutgers University in New York City, USA. Participants under 18 years of age were made to explore what Energy, Physicality, Concentration, Character, Self-Awareness, Teamwork and Environment meant to an actor. This intensive sessions were specially designed to equip students with vital tools that helped them lend truthfulness to the character played.
In 2010, Aditee Biswas – an illustrious National School of Drama (NSD alumnus), took charge as the workshop director. She not only repeated the success of the previous year, but also took the workshop to greater heights. Her unique training module allowed participants to have exhaustive knowledge on the stage craft, enabling them to script, design and stage plays on their own.
Since then, we have taken a breather for we felt the need to reformat the workshop to keep up with the changing need of the hour. We now intend to offer more to our students in terms of knowledge which is ultra hands-on, yet theoretically more comprehensive in nature. The soon-to-be-introduced new format of the First Act Workshop will ensure the participants are best equipped to face the real-world challenges in Theatre. So if you genuinely believe you have the actor factor in you, then look forward to the spring of 2012.
